Hero Among UsGunnery Sergeant Marshall Roberts was our first Heroes Among Us Honoree.  GySgt Roberts was honored at Saturday's Lowell Spinners Game against the Vermont Lake Monsters.  As the Hero Among Us, Marshall took batting practice with the team, threw out the first pitch, and ate All You Can Eat BBQ in the Gator Pit and watched the game in the luxurious Yawkey Suite with 10 of his family members and friends.

His citation reads as follows:

"The United States Marine Corps has two missions: Win battles and make Marines.  Gunnery Sergeant (GySgt) Roberts has done both and done them both exceedingly well.  As a helicopter mechanic and crew chief GySgt Roberts has deployed to various hotspots around the world.  He has deployed to East Timor in support of Operation Stabilize which was tasked with supporting the multinational peacekeeping effort following an independence referendum.

"GySgt Roberts and his squadron provided transportation logistics command and control communications intelligences and sustainment support for the local populations.  GySgt Roberts has also deployed to Afghanistan where he flew over combat zones in support of Casualty Evacuation Missions.

"Following his deployments GySgt Roberts volunteered for recruiting duty; arguably the most challenging duty outside of combat.  As part of the recruiting force GySgt Roberts has excelled in the ranks taking over as a SNCOIC in charge of numerous recruiting substations  assistant recruiter instructor  and as operations chief which is responsible for 15 substations  100 recruiters and the contracting and shipping of over 1500 potential Marine Recruits.  He has personally inspired over 200 young men and women to join the ranks of the United States Marine Corps along with leading and mentoring dozens of Marines.

"GySgt Roberts' personal awards include two Navy Commendation Medals, a Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal the Humanitarian Service Medal and a Outstanding Volunteer Service Medal.   GySgt Roberts has sacrificed a lot throughout his time in the Marine Corps.  He has spent years away from his wife Amber Monroe and his three children Austin, Rebecca and Codey.  He is constantly working long hours in support of the mission and is constantly an inspiration throughout the unit.  He will be rotating out of this unit come August and he will be sorely missed.  We hope we can give him one last memory before he moves on to bigger and better challenges."
