I am aware that there are many renovations that I can invest in to help make my home a more environmentally friendly place to live. I understand that paying a little bit extra for a more energy-efficient heating system, or for windows and doors rated by Energy Star for their efficiency, will end up saving me in the long run due to the amount of money I’ll save every month on my energy bills. But some kinds of energy-efficiency improvements cost a lot of money. There’s always the option to finance energy-efficiency improvements for my home, but do I really want to go that far?
Here’s the thing. I want to be responsible with my borrowing. So do I really want to spend money on something I can’t afford right now? Honestly – when I look at the benefits of improving the energy-efficiency of my home – maybe I actually do.
What are the benefits of an energy-efficient home?:
Financing home energy improvements is not actually as difficult as one might think.
For Example:
If you’re a NSTAR, National Grid, and Columbia Gas customer in Massachusetts, you may be eligible for a number of energy-saving rebates and incentives including things like targeted air sealing at no-cost.
You could also be eligible to get 75 percent off home insulation work up to $2,000. In other words, a $2,000 home insulation improvement would only cost you $500.
This money can be borrowed interest free for qualifying borrowers through the Mass Save program.
Basically, if I want to invest in any renovations for my home, I might as well make renovations that will benefit my wallet, my lifestyle and the environment around me, by making sure that they are energy-efficient upgrades. By doing this, I’ll even save money if I choose to finance energy-efficiency upgrades through discounts and interest free loans!
