Life on a Budget: 10 Free Boston Events for Your Summer Selfies

All summer, our Life on a Budget series has been exploring very cool things to do in the Boston area without spending any money. Yep, free admission! This week, visit one of the country’s most popular zoos, stop by the annual GreenFest, play some Pokemon, take in a classic movie, and more!

Raise the quality of your selfies with some awesome destination shots, and raise the balance in your savings account at the same time. It’s a win-win!

Twilight Skyline Viewing at Fort Independence

Castle Island, South Boston

Take in the history of Fort Independence and enjoy stunning views of Boston harbor. Stroll the walkway while watching the sun set along the Boston skyline. For more information, visit

9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Pokemon World Championships 2015

Hynes Convention Center

Try for the title of Pokemon World Champ or watch the masters of the game. Anyone can play, but participation space is limited. Find out more about registration here. Thousands of fans and spectators are expected at this family-friendly event.

8th Annual Boston GreenFest

The Discovery Museums

177 Main Street, Acton

The Children’s Discovery Museum and The Science Discovery Museum will be open at no charge as part of the Highland Street Foundation’s Free Fun Fridays program. Activities, music and food are scheduled for the expected crowd. Overflow parking with a free shuttle bus will be available in the Kmart parking lot at the corner of Routes 27 and 111.

Frankin Park Zoo

Franklin Park Road, Boston

As part of the Free Fun Fridays program sponsored by the Highland Street Foundation, admission is free at the Franklin Park Zoo. Be prepared for a crowd, as this is one of the popular free attractions of the summer. The last entry will take place at 3 p.m.

Free Friday Flicks at the Hatch Shell

Boston Esplanade

The feature film is Guardian of the Galaxy, a 2014 superhero film rated PG-13. Pack a blanket and spread out under the summer sky for a chance to see the stars. If the weather is questionable, call the Free Friday Flicks Hotline at 617-787-7200 for an update on event details.


Saturday, August 22

6 to 9 p.m.

Family Film Festival

Prudential Center South Garden, Boston

The beloved Toy Story is the featured presentation for this outdoor family event. The movie will begin at sundown. Blankets are welcome. Before the show, there will be entertainment, children’s activities and giveaways. The rain date for this event is Wednesday, August 26.

11 a.m. to 5 p.m. (vehicle registration begins at 9 a.m.)

3rd Annual Car Show

American Legion Nonantum Post 440, Newton Corner

Over 100 trophies will be awarded in nearly 60 categories of new and vintage cars. In addition to the extensive auto exhibit, there will be music and food available.

7:30 p.m.

The Taming of the Shrew

Atlantic Wharf, 290 Congress Street

This is one stop in a 20-stop run through Massachusetts and Delmarva. The Shakespeare classic is presented by the Brown Box Theatre Project. In the event of rain, the production will be held indoors.

Totally Righteous 80’s Dance Party

Adams Park, Roslindale

All ages are invited to curl their bangs, rock some scrunchies and get ready for Hammer time. Hosted by Roslindale Village Main Street.
