Hanscom FCU fielded a team in the 2015 Relay for Life in Burlington, MA. The Relay is a 24-hour fundraiser for the American Cancer Society to support cancer treatment, research, and prevention. In communities all over the world, teams get together to walk a local track, camp out, and support people touched by this terrible disease.
We’ve been part of Relay since 1999. Hanscom FCU’s team has a passion for this event. Fundraising started months in advance: holding raffles, sponsoring restaurant fundraisers, and hosting a paint night that brought out a bunch of people to socialize and, oh yeah, create art.
Our goal is to exceed last year’s $10,006 total. While the final amount has not yet been announced, I would not be surprised if we pass last year’s donation.
At this year’s Relay, we enjoyed great weather, delicious food, a huge raffle with terrific prizes, and lots of activities for kids and adults. Emotional moments rose up too, as cancer survivors shared their stories and participants took time to remember loved ones lost to the disease.
Relay is one of those things that we do as part of a community. It brings us closer to others through the shared heartache of losing someone, the humbling inspiration of survivors’ stories, and the determined vow to keep fighting for a cure.
We’d love to see you next year – Relay is an event not to be missed. To find a Relay near you or learn about fielding your own team, visit http://relay.acsevents.org/.
