6 Ways Kids Can Earn Money This Summer

School’s out and, chances are, your kids are on the hunt for cash. When they don’t have enough money to buy X, Y or Z, they want a fast fix - maybe a cash infusion from you?

Instead, use their enthusiasm to show them that money doesn’t grow on trees. Get kids thinking about how to earn extra money this summer with these six ideas:

1. Help out at home. Let kids earn spending money by going above and beyond regular chores. Big projects like cleaning out the garage or attic keeps them busy and frees you to do other projects.

2. Provide pet services. Walk a neighbor's dog during the day or set up a tub and wash dogs in the driveway. Older kids can care for neighbors' pets while they're on vacation.

3. Wash cars. Grab a bucket and a hose and turn your driveway into a car wash!

4. Make things to sell. Kids might choose jewelry, crafts, lemonade or cookies. Set up a stand and make some colorful signs. This activity should always be supervised.

5. Play with little kids. Even if they’re not old enough to babysit, kids might be a helper and entertain small children while their parents are home.

6. Do yard work in the neighborhood. Water plants, pull weeds, cut the grass. Kids can advertise their services by making flyers and delivering them to neighbors you know and trust.

Don’t Spend It All in One Place!

Remind kids to save some of the money they earn for big things they may want to buy later. Encourage them to keep their money safe in a savings account.
