And 2018 was no different with its driving rain, gusty winds, and lower-than-normal April temperatures.

Hanscom FCU’s Ray Phillips On Running The Boston Marathon At 70

Posted by Diana Burrell on Apr 3, 2018 8:56:16 AM

Ray Phillips thought running the Boston Marathon in 2000 would be a one-time thing. He was over 50 and thrilled to get a coveted bib number as a charity runner for Team Hanscom FCU, which supports Credit Unions Kids at Heart.  Yet while he looked forward to the challenge, he didn’t have a compelling reason to put himself through more training seasons and possible injury in the future.

Andy Martin Runs Boston Marathon 2018 for Team Hanscom FCU

Posted by Diana Burrell on Mar 30, 2018 7:00:00 AM

When Andy Martin, Jr. ran the Boston Marathon for Team Hanscom FCU in 2017, he ran it in honor of his grandfather, who had recently passed away and was one of Andy’s biggest supporters.

Andy, who was born with spina bifada, was only 4 years old in 2000 when he became the Patient Partner of Ray Phillips, a Hanscom FCU board member and first-time marathoner. Fourteen years later, fueled by a goal he’d had since that first race, Andy completed the 2014 Boston Marathon as wheelchair entrant.

Ray greets Andy just before the finish line.

Well, Team Hanscom has done it again. Our runners, Mike Rzeszutek and Ray Phillips, completed the Boston Marathon and so far, we have raised over $37,500 for Boston Children’s Hospital.

Monday’s spectacular weather brought thousands of spectators out to cheer on the runners. The warm temperatures took a toll on runners, though, especially Mike and Ray. They braved the midday heat, starting at 11:15 am in the last wave of runners.

Our runners pulled through. Mike finished in 4:38:17 and Ray finished in 5:50:39. They are both winners to me.
